Ian Rush MBE was a Welsh footballer. He is best known for his time playing for Liverpool, where he played 346 games scoring 172 goals, winning the FA Cup in 1986, and finishing runner-up to Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League in 1987. Rush was signed by Liverpool manager Bob Paisley for £325,000, making him the then-most expensive teenager in British football when he signed. Rush made his Liverpool debut against Bradford City on 27 August 1985. His first goal for Liverpool came in his second game against Notts County on 10 September 1985; this was to be his only league goal of the season.

Rush made his European debut in the UEFA Cup against PSV Eindhoven on 28 September 1985, and scored his first European goal in the second leg on 6 March 1986 against PSV to take his side into the quarter-finals. He played very little during the 1986–87 season after breaking several ribs when he collided with Everton goalkeeper Neville Southall during a game at Anfield. After missing three months of action, he returned to fitness during the home game against Oldham Athletic on 15 December 1986 and scored twice in a 4–2 win.

At the end of the season he had scored six goals in twelve appearances. Rush would go on to score 34 goals in 80 appearances for Liverpool before leaving Anfield to join Juventus F.C..
